Wood Duck drakes exhibit form and color perhaps unrivaled among our North American dabbling ducks. The iridescence of their large heads almost defeats representation in a limited palette of oils, but then it should come as no surprise that what God creates excels our attempts to represent. In this painting my goal was to focus on a painterly, impressionistic approach with only those details necessary to do some justice to the subject.
